Nom*D Turncoats WINTER 10

TURNCOATS / NOM*D WINTER 2010

We used to be good children. And then we grew up and we ran away.....

For Winter 2010, NOM*d presents... Turncoats, a journey from innocence to experience,
with a few lessons in non-conformity along the way.

They started out as paragons of virtue. Modest pinafores and sober suiting are
rendered in a God-fearing palette of black, khaki, and virginal white. Bibs and
aprons are key shapes for young pilgrims, with the military accents and reworked
tailoring that are the hallmarks of NOM*d.

But good children must grow up, and at the heart of Turncoats is the adolescent rite
of passage that leaves no little girl (or boy) unchanged.
Tie dyed velvet and brazen flashes of silver remind us that there's more to life than
hoping for Heaven. Worldly delights are referenced in accents of leather and velvet,
adding an unexpected sensuality to garments worked in wool jersey, sweatshirting
and flowing rayon.

The conflict between conformity and self expression is embodied in leather pieces
that literally cage the body, a witty play on the possibility of throwing off what shackles
may bind you.

The journey this season is towards self-knowledge, and just as knowledge transforms
us, so too vintage fabrics and traditional shirting are reworked into dresses
and tailoring as the old becomes the new.

This is a wardrobe for visionaries, brave enough to find their own path. Being yourself doesn't
necessarily mean being alone in
this world. Some of these children grow up, and make their way back home.

Their rites of passage enacted, in a blaze of blues and purples, the Turncoats take
their place in a confident new world.

Aesop

Aesop launched in 1987, offering botanically based skin, hair and body products for men and women.

They have signature stores in London, Paris, Zurich, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei, as well as throughout Australia.

Since their beginning, they have not wavered from our intention to create a range of superlative products. They remain committed to including the highest-quality plant-based ingredients, and make judicious use of non-botanical elements such as anti-oxidants, once we are confident research has proven them safe and effective. The exquisite scents for which Aesop products are renowned are an incidental treat.

Aesop values all human endeavours undertaken with intellectual rigour, vision, and a nod to the whimsical. They make every product with the same attention to detail that we believe should be applied to life at large, taking into consideration the needs of your skin, the specifics of your environment, and the constraints on your time.

They advocate the use of our products as part of a balanced life that includes a healthy diet, sensible exercise, and a regular intake of good books.

#1 Designer Profile: ALPHA 60

ALPHA 60

who: Alex & Georgie Cleary
where: Melbourne
pic: (1) Alex and Georgie Cleary after their show at RAFW

Brother and sister duo have created a label which seemingly appears to sum up Melbourne as a fashon icon. Alpha 60 pushing the boundaries of geometry and textures is continuously evolving. The label now has three flagship stores in the three fashion centres of Melbourne - Brunswick Rd, Chapel St, and Flinders Lane - and has recently opened another flagship store in Sydney. The label is stocked at various stores such as FAT and The Grand Social online.

Created twisted pleated scafes, holey sweaters, anaoraks, and a great line of jewellery. Unwilling to put constraints on their passionately creative approach, the pair have embraced a range of influences, with everyone from Kate Moss to Jean-Luc Goddard to Alfred E Newman making unexpected appearances.

The label has been around for a while now and still progressing, showing at LMFF and Australian Fashion Week in Sydney. Their shows all produce surprise and excitement, this year starting with a film. The label launched in 2002 at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) alongside Vivienne Westwood, getting picked up by distributors from Australia at first, then Japan, New York and France.

Deadly Ponies

Deadly Ponies represents the united worlds of creators Liam Bowden and Katie Smith. A passion for sculptural arts, crafts and tactile design brought the pair together and from their collaboration grew the world in which Deadly Ponies lives. From the moody well of forgotten childhood, DPs vision integrates a world of mishmash thoughts and ideas drawing inspiration from the world of the enchanted forest. Each unique piece is lovingly created entirely by hand from the selection of the leather to the stitching and hand screening of the labels. Designed and made entirely in New Zealand, Deadly Ponies offers an eclectic collection of handbags, wallets, and jewelry all featuring top-quality materials and workmanship. Every piece is slightly different from the next, with it’s own idiosyncrasies delightfully reminding us of the beauty of leather. With one foot in high quality and the other in layered design, the constant re-working means these pieces blur the line between high-function and high fashion. The out come is always to be treasured, enticing even those anti-bagists to venture out and carry something.

//I'm liking their new range of Jewelery, Deadly Ponies Precious, (now having more Jewellery stockists than bags!), all made of gorgeous materials sourced from around the world, including some lovely little pieces made out of bone.

FINDING CHEERFULNESS WITH NOM*d

FINDING CHEERFULNESS // SUMMER 09/10

Leonard Cohen knows it, though it took him a lot of songs and a few prescription meds to work it out. And this summer, NOM*d know it too. Fed up with the current vogue for doom and gloom, they're resolute in their pursuit of sunshine and "Finding Cheerfulness" is the result.

Don't worry, be happy is the mantra this season, as easyfit shapes and the lightweight drapes of silks, linens and cottons combine to remind us that really, life could be worse. It’s a hunt for a silver lining, and as usual, NOM*d are not afraid to turn the closet upside down and inside out to find it.

How they put it all back together again is their business of course, and as usual, Margi Robertson and co. are playing by their own rules. Experiments with form and construction are the NOM*d calling card and in this collection it takes the form of witty plays with denim and uniform shirting. Key shapes like bombers, housecoats, bloomers and camis are reworked in sheer and textured cotton, and dresses await the wee whisper of a petticoat to peep through.

As if we didn't have enough encouragement to stop and smell the roses, the idea is right there in a floral print that nestles up against the quintessential NOM*d check. The most delicious surprise of the season is fruit flavoured however, as the classic NOM*d colour palette of dawn and dusk and midnight is supplemented by colours of an altogether juicier hue. Joyful shades of watermelon and mandarin blaze out from the grey wreckage of the recession, crowned by a molten lava print that is magma-hot.

It’s all NOM*d’s way of reminding us that cheerfulness is there for the finding, it's just a question of knowing where to look.

ZAMBESI SUMMER

"Zambesi presents a collection of bold simplicity — exploring the concept of appearances and the complexities beneath the surface.

Womenswear:
“Cool, calm, and collected.”
— Elisabeth Findlay
A desire for simplicity and refinement delivers a collection of pared back silhouettes.
Double-breasted half-lined jackets and sleeveless vests in washed linen hint at the traditions of menswear. Narrow low-rise shorts and trousers contrast with classic tailoring to achieve a balance of relaxed confidence. A suit jacket and trench in ultra-fine wool gauze are borrowed from the Mens Collection, reinforcing a masculine presence.
Fluid viscose skirts adapt to strapless/halter dresses. Cone-shaped bodices and dresses create a sculptural form. A translucent nylon parka diffuses the garments beneath. The use of elastic detailing on dresses, skirts and waistcoats brings an unexpected element to classic pieces.

Menswear:
“It should feel like a second skin, not something you feel at all self-conscious in.”
— Dayne Johnston
The Zambesi Mens Collection proposes simple, classic shapes. Traditional tailored menswear is given a minimal feel. Sharp suiting is offered in bright red cotton, stark linens, and ultra-fine wool gauze, defined with off-white lining.
Elastic detailing is used as an accent. Tonal elastic harnessing accompanies suiting and a horizontal strap features on cotton shirting.
Fabrics in varying degrees of transparency play with convention. Fully fashioned cotton knitwear is semi-sheer. Ultra-fine gauge wool gauze is used to make a structured jacket and trench coat. Swim shorts in sheer nylon reveal visible black lining.

Accessories:
Leather accessories, coloured elastic harnessing, striped elastic belts, feathered pocket squares, fringed linen scarves, and tonal flat shoes in shiny patents, contrasted with matte ostrich texture. "

-A personal favourite being the cool harness that they have designed to go over tees and singlets and jackets. Another stunning Zambesi collection.
