FINDING CHEERFULNESS WITH NOM*d

FINDING CHEERFULNESS // SUMMER 09/10

Leonard Cohen knows it, though it took him a lot of songs and a few prescription meds to work it out. And this summer, NOM*d know it too. Fed up with the current vogue for doom and gloom, they're resolute in their pursuit of sunshine and "Finding Cheerfulness" is the result.

Don't worry, be happy is the mantra this season, as easyfit shapes and the lightweight drapes of silks, linens and cottons combine to remind us that really, life could be worse. It’s a hunt for a silver lining, and as usual, NOM*d are not afraid to turn the closet upside down and inside out to find it.

How they put it all back together again is their business of course, and as usual, Margi Robertson and co. are playing by their own rules. Experiments with form and construction are the NOM*d calling card and in this collection it takes the form of witty plays with denim and uniform shirting. Key shapes like bombers, housecoats, bloomers and camis are reworked in sheer and textured cotton, and dresses await the wee whisper of a petticoat to peep through.

As if we didn't have enough encouragement to stop and smell the roses, the idea is right there in a floral print that nestles up against the quintessential NOM*d check. The most delicious surprise of the season is fruit flavoured however, as the classic NOM*d colour palette of dawn and dusk and midnight is supplemented by colours of an altogether juicier hue. Joyful shades of watermelon and mandarin blaze out from the grey wreckage of the recession, crowned by a molten lava print that is magma-hot.

It’s all NOM*d’s way of reminding us that cheerfulness is there for the finding, it's just a question of knowing where to look.
